Woman seriously injured in dog attack at Ashburnham home; dog shot during rescue

ASHBURNHAM — On Saturday, Aug. 23, 2025, at approximately 10:50 a.m., Ashburnham police officers were dispatched to a residence on Gardner Road following a report of a past dog bite.

According to a statement from Chief Chris Conrad, officers arriving at the scene saw through the front door window a woman on the hallway floor being actively attacked by two large dogs.

Ashburnham police and fire personnel forced entry into the residence.

“Upon entering the residence, both dogs lunged at officers and paramedics,” Chief Conrad said. “To stop the attack, officers were required to deploy their taser and tase the dogs. However, the taser was ineffective on one dog, which then required one officer to deploy his firearm and shoot one round at the dog to end the attack.”

The woman was then removed from the residence and transported to an area hospital with serious injuries.

“The current condition of the victim and dogs are not known at this time,” Chief Conrad said. Adding, “Officers on scene sustained minor injuries.”

The incident is under investigation by Ashburnham/Gardner Regional Animal Control and the Ashburnham Police Department.
