Solar panel fire forces evacuation at Lunenburg Middle High School on first day back

LUNENBURG — The first day of school ended early for Lunenburg Middle High School students Tuesday after a fire broke out on the building’s roof, damaging several solar panels, according to Lunenburg police and fire officials.

In a statement, the Lunenburg Police Department said, “All students and staff are accounted for and no injuries were reported.” Police added that dismissal instructions were emailed to families and asked parents to follow those directions to help firefighters at the scene.

Sky5 aerial footage from WCVB showed firefighters on the roof, which is covered in solar panels. At least six panels were visibly damaged. Fire officials told WCVB the blaze was extinguished in 15 to 20 minutes using dry chemical extinguishers, since water cannot be used on solar panel fires.

Other than the damaged panels, the building sustained only minor damage, officials said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. It is unknown at the present time if school will resume tomorrow.
