FALL RIVER — At approximately 5:00 p.m. today, the Fall River Police Department received multiple calls reporting that a man had been stabbed near the 100 block of Hartwell Street.
According to a statement from the Fall River Police Department, when responding officers and EMS arrived on scene, they discovered that the victim was former Fall River Mayor Will Flanagan.
“Mr. Flanagan sustained significant injuries and was transported to an area hospital, where he is currently listed in serious but stable condition,” the Fall River Police Department said in its statement.
The Fall River Police Department said its Patrol Bureau and Major Case Division are actively investigating and “working multiple leads” to identify and apprehend the suspect.
“Our patrol officers and detectives responded swiftly and are working diligently to identify and apprehend who is responsible for this senseless act of violence,” Chief Kelly Furtado said. “We will exhaust every resource to ensure justice is served. I want to thank the Mayor’s Office for their continued support as we move forward with this investigation.”
Mayor Paul Coogan stated, “My thoughts and prayers are with Former Mayor Will Flanagan, his family, and friends. The full support of the Mayor’s Office is with the Fall River Police Department as they work tirelessly to bring justice in this case. We stand firmly behind Chief Kelly Furtado, and the dedicated men and women of the FRPD as they continue this active investigation.”
