FALL RIVER — On the evening of Sunday, July 13, 2025, at approximately 9:40 p.m., Fall River police and firefighters were dispatched to The Gabriel House Assisted Living Facility on Oliver Street following a report of a fire.
According to a statement from the Fall River Police Department, when first responders arrived, they encountered heavy smoke pouring from the building and residents trapped inside—some of whom were seen hanging out of windows and calling for help.
“Without hesitation, officers entered the smoke-filled facility, breaking down doors and escorting residents to safety,” the department said. “Approximately a dozen non-ambulatory residents were physically carried out by our officers. Their bravery and quick action undoubtedly saved many lives.”

At a press conference the following morning, Fall River Fire Chief Jeffrey Bacon said that nine people died in the fire—some at the scene and others after being transported to local hospitals. Thirty additional residents were hospitalized, one of whom remains in critical condition. Five firefighters were also treated for minor injuries and have since been released.
Firefighters worked quickly to bring the blaze under control. The volume of medical emergencies prompted mutual aid from surrounding communities.
Fall River Mayor John Coogan commended first responders for their efforts, stating that police and fire personnel did a “spectacular job” rescuing residents and managing the scene amid “an indescribable tragedy.”
The cause of the fire remains under investigation and will be handled jointly by the Fall River police and fire departments. Officials are asking for the public’s patience and cooperation as the investigation continues. The scene remains active and secured by public safety personnel.
