ESSEX — The Essex Police Department has identified the driver of a silver Mercedes that struck an 11-year-old riding an electric scooter yesterday.
According to a statement from the Essex Police Department, on Thursday, Oct. 23, the silver Mercedes and 11-year-old collided at the intersection of Western Avenue and Pond Street.
“The driver flagged down an officer in the area,” the Essex Police Department said in its statement. “The officer and driver had a discussion, but due to a miscommunication, the driver left the scene before they could be identified.”
The 11-year-old was not seriously injured and didn’t need to be transported to the hospital.
The Essex Police Department said that the driver of the Mercedes came to the police station today and is being cooperative with police. The identity of the driver has not yet been released.
Police said no charges have been filed at this time.
“Any time a vehicle collides with anything or anyone, no matter how slight or severe, the driver must remain on scene for identification and documentation purposes,” the Essex Police Department said in its statement. “The driver in this case misunderstood the officer after having alerted him to the child on the scooter.”
The incident remains under investigation by the Essex Police Department.
