Sudbury man arrested after crashing SUV into utility pole in Essex

ESSEX — On Saturday, July 11, 2026, at approximately 5:00 a.m., Essex police and firefighters responded to Island Road following a report of a single-vehicle crash.

According to the Essex Police Chief Thomas Shamshak Jr., when officers arrived on scene, they located a gray 2019 Volkswagen Atlas that had struck and snapped a utility pole.

Police encountered an adult man near the crashed vehicle. Chief Shamshak said the man refused to identify himself during the investigation but was later identified as Peter Bozier, 34, of Sudbury.

Bozier was arrested and charged with the following:

  • Negligent Operation of a Motor Vehicle
  • Operating a Motor Vehicle without a License
  • Refusal to Submit to a Police Officer

“Bozier is known to police,” Chief Shamshak said. Adding, “Police interviewed several individuals in connection with the crash. The circumstances surrounding the incident, including the involvement of those present, remain under investigation.”

National Grid responded to the scene to replace the damaged utility pole and Island Road remained closed for several hours while crews completed repairs.

“Our officers quickly secured the scene and immediately began investigating the circumstances of this crash,” Chief Shamshak said. “We appreciate the assistance of the Essex Fire Department and National Grid in helping restore the roadway safely while the investigation remains ongoing.”

Bozier is expected to be arraigned Monday in Gloucester District Court.
