SOUTH YARMOUTH — A Yarmouth police officer arrested a Hyannis man Sunday night after a crack pipe fell from his pocket while he was being assisted into an ambulance.
According to a statement from the Yarmouth Police Department, the incident occurred just before 9:30 p.m. on Nov. 2. An officer driving along Station Avenue saw a man limping and partially bent over in the breakdown lane. Concerned for his safety, the officer turned around to check on him.

Police said the man, identified as Damon Legeyt, 45, of Hyannis, told the officer he was experiencing a medical issue and requested a ride to a neighboring town. Yarmouth firefighters responded, and Legeyt accepted transport to a hospital.
As he was walking toward the ambulance, a crack pipe fell from his pocket and shattered on the ground, police said. Officers then found a small bag of crack cocaine in his possession.
Legeyt was arrested and charged with Possession of a Class B Drug (crack cocaine). Police said he was also wanted on three outstanding warrants.
The Yarmouth Police Department said it “remains committed to proactively addressing drug-related activity and protecting the safety of the community.”
