One person killed, firefighter seriously injured in Middleborough condo fire

MIDDLEBOROUGH — On Sunday, Dec. 7, 2025, at approximately 9:51 a.m., the Middleborough Fire Department responded to 172 Ashley Lane following reports of a structure fire.

According to a statement from Middleborough Fire Chief Owen Thompson, when crews arrived on scene, they observed heavy smoke and flames billowing from the first and second floors of the condo building. The fire had also extended to adjacent condo units, Chief Thompson said.

“One person, an adult, was pronounced dead at the scene,” Chief Thompson said in the statement. “Two other residents were transported by Carver EMS to an area hospital for what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries.”

A Lakeville firefighter who had responded to the scene with other members of his department to provide mutual aid suffered significant, non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to St. Luke’s Hospital for evaluation.

The two adjacent buildings, which contain four units, sustained significant damage. Residents are being assisted by the American Red Cross, Chief Thompson said.

Mutual aid was provided by Bridgewater, Raynham, Lakeville and Wareham fire departments, as well as Carver EMS. The Carver Fire Department provided station coverage.

“Crews will remain on scene to monitor hot spots,” Chief Thompson said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Middleborough Fire Department, Middleborough Police, the Massachusetts State Police Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit, and State Police detectives assigned to the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office.
