STURBRIDGE — On Thursday, Jan. 15, 2026, at approximately 2:44 p.m., Sturbridge police and fire crews, along with Massachusetts State Police troopers, responded to the area of 530 Main Street following a report of a serious motor vehicle crash.
According to a statement from Sturbridge Police Chief Earl Dessert, when first responders arrived on scene, they located a single vehicle that had struck a utility pole. The driver and sole occupant was trapped inside the vehicle, and Sturbridge police officers assisted Sturbridge firefighters with patient care and stabilization while extrication efforts were underway.
During the initial response, police said a Good Samaritan nurse who was in the area stopped to assist and helped emergency personnel stabilize the driver prior to the extrication.
After the driver was extricated from the vehicle, the individual was transported by ambulance to Harrington Memorial Hospital and later airlifted by UMass LifeFlight for additional treatment.
“I would like to thank the men and women of the Sturbridge Police and Fire Department, the Massachusetts State Police, UMass LifeFlight, and all assisting agencies for their professionalism, teamwork, and coordinated response,” Chief Dessert said. “Incidents such as this demonstrate the importance of interagency cooperation and the dedication of public safety and medical professionals who serve our community each day.”
The crash remains under investigation by the Sturbridge Police Department in conjunction with the Central Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council (CEMLEC) Accident Reconstruction Team.
Chief Dessert said anyone with information is encouraged to contact Officer Zachary Marderosian of the Sturbridge Police Department.
