SHREWSBURY — On Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2026, at approximately 10:37 a.m., Detective Chris Vieira of the Shrewsbury Police Department was on duty in an unmarked cruiser on Lakeview Avenue when he observed a green Toyota RAV4 fail to stop at a stop sign at the intersection of Boston Turnpike (Route 9) and Lakeview Avenue.
According to a statement from the Shrewsbury Police Department, Detective Vieira stopped the vehicle on Route 9 westbound just before the Lake Quinsigamond bridge.
The Shrewsbury Police Department said a roadside investigation led Detective Vieira to develop probable cause to believe drugs were inside the vehicle.
Detective Vieira was assisted at the scene by Officers Jordan Carroll, Cal Samuel, and Mark Sklut.
The vehicle’s two occupants were asked to exit, and a search was conducted of both individuals as well as the vehicle.
Police said the search led to the discovery of more than 18 grams of fentanyl and over 34 grams of crack cocaine, along with four cell phones.
Officers also seized $888 under MGL Chapter 94C, Section 47, which authorizes forfeiture of money directly associated with drug distribution, the Shrewsbury Police Department said.
The operator, identified as Sergio Hernandez, 43, of Auburn, was arrested and charged with:
- Trafficking fentanyl (more than 10 grams)
- Trafficking Class B substance, crack cocaine (more than 18 grams)
- Conspiracy to violate controlled substance laws
- Stop sign violation
The passenger, identified as Alexandra Rivera, 44, of Worcester, was arrested and charged with:
- Trafficking fentanyl (more than 10 grams)
- Trafficking Class B substance, crack cocaine (more than 18 grams)
- Conspiracy to violate controlled substance laws
- Seatbelt violation
