Clinton town clerk resigns, seat to be filled at upcoming election

CLINTON — Town Clerk Holly Sargent has submitted her resignation effective June 5, a move that will allow the select board to place the position on the ballot for the upcoming municipal election.

The announcement came during the Jan. 21, 2026, Clinton Select Board meeting, where members thanked her for her years of service to the community.

“I appreciate Holly’s contribution to Clinton all these years,” said Select Board member William Connolly. Later adding, “I remember, maybe it was the charter commission, where we discussed the town clerk position and we described it as the face of the town to most people when they come into the building looking for information and she’s done an outstanding job representing Clinton from that office. So, I want to thank her for her service.”

Sean Kerrigan, the clerk of the board, added, “She’s a consummate pro. She’s just terrific. I wish her a ton of luck in her retirement. She deserves it. But having that front-facing person who’s personable and professional, big shoes to fill. We were lucky to have her for so long.”

Board Chair Julie Perusse agreed, stating Sargent “will be missed.”

Town Administrator Michael Ward said the select board may need to vote at a future meeting to place the town clerk position on the ballot because Sargent’s current elected term does not expire until 2028. He added that Sargent had already reached out to town counsel and that additional details about the process will be provided to the board at its next meeting.

The board did not vote on the matter during their Jan. 21 meeting, but are expected to address the election logistics at their next meeting.
