Explosion at Taunton home seriously injures mother and 2-year-old child

TAUNTON — On Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2026, at approximately 9:50 a.m., the Taunton police and fire departments responded to reports of an explosion with multiple burn victims at a residence located at 78 Plain Street.

According to the Taunton Police Department, when firefighters arrived on scene, they found the three-family residence completely engulfed in flames. Two residents — a mother and child — were injured. The 25-year-old woman was transported by Raynham Fire Department ambulance to Rhode Island Hospital with severe burns, while the two-year-old child was taken by Brewster Ambulance to Hasbro Children’s Hospital with serious injuries.

Taunton fire crews battled the flames with a ground attack and deployed several aerial trucks, eventually bringing the situation under control.

Taunton police said that three families lived at 78 Plain Street and eight total people were displaced after the fire, which left the home a total loss. Two neighboring homes also sustained significant burn damage.

Eversource responded to the scene to shut off utilities at the affected homes.

No firefighters were injured. All Taunton Fire Department apparatus and off-duty personnel responded to the scene to battle the fire, and the Raynham Fire Department sent an engine and an ambulance to assist at the scene.

The origin and cause of the explosion remain under investigation by the Taunton Fire Department, the Taunton Police Department, and the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
