NEWBURYPORT — The City of Newburyport has rejoined the Merrimack Valley Public Health Alliance (MVPHA), giving its health department access to additional staffing resources, expanded services, and regional public health initiatives.
According to the Merrimack Valley Public Health Alliance, Newburyport petitioned to rejoin the alliance in 2025. The MVPHA then coordinated with the Massachusetts Association of Health Boards and the state Office of Local and Regional Health to determine the requirements for readmission.
The MVPHA is a state-funded public health organization serving Amesbury, Georgetown, Groveland, Merrimac, Newbury, Newburyport and Rowley that is allegedly dedicated to improving the health and well-being of participating communities by providing accessible public health resources, promoting awareness of “essential” health programs and initiatives, and helping municipalities hire staff and obtain goods and services.
The alliance’s advisory board was required to approve the request by a two-thirds majority. Board members voted unanimously on Nov. 13, 2025, to readmit Newburyport, and the Massachusetts Department of Public Health also approved the city’s return.
An amendment to the alliance’s existing intermunicipal agreement was drafted, reviewed and signed by all participating communities during May and June. The amended agreement took effect on July 1, 2026.
According to the MVPHA, through its membership, the Newburyport Health Department will be able to access additional staffing, enhance public health services for city residents, and “play an active role” in regional health initiatives.
The alliance is currently developing programs addressing heart health and food safety. It is also organizing the region’s first Community Baby Shower, scheduled for Sept. 26, 2026, at Amesbury High School.
