FALMOUTH — On Sunday, Sept. 27, 2026, at approximately 6:53 a.m., Falmouth police responded to the beach in front of the Falmouth Yacht Club on Clinton Avenue following a report of a vehicle in the water.
According to the Falmouth Police Department, when police arrived on scene, they found an unoccupied Mazda CX-5 floating in shallow water just off the beach with extensive front-end damage.
A preliminary investigation indicates the vehicle failed to stop at the stop sign at the intersection of Grand Avenue and Clinton Avenue before continuing straight into a guardrail that separates the sidewalk from the beach. The Falmouth Police Department said the vehicle crashed through the guardrail and ultimately came to rest in the water.
While searching the surrounding area for any occupants of the vehicle, police located evidence of an attempted breaking and entering at the Falmouth Yacht Club, along with discarded property on the club’s grounds.
At approximately 8:30 a.m., police located the suspected driver, a 23-year-old Florida man, inside a hotel room at the neighboring Tides Hotel, according to the Falmouth Police Department.
The Falmouth Fire Rescue Department responded and transported the man to Falmouth Hospital in stable condition.
A heavy-duty towing company later removed the vehicle from the water. Police said there was no indication the crash caused any environmental impact.
The crash and the subsequent activity involving the suspected driver remain under investigation by the Falmouth Police Department.
The Falmouth Police Department said criminal charges are expected once the investigation is complete.
