LEICESTER โ€“ On Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2026, at approximately 1:51 p.m., Leicester Police Officers Ives Fisher and Stephen Kustigian were dispatched to Walmart Supercenter on Soojian Drive following a report that a man stole a few hundred dollarsโ€™ worth of clothing.

Officer Ives said that as he and Officer Kustigian were approaching the entrance to Walmartโ€™s parking lot, they observed an individual matching the description provided by dispatch crossing Main Street, a male wearing black clothing and carrying two backpacks.

โ€œI safely turned my cruiser around facing westbound. I exited my cruiser and saw that the maleโ€™s walking pace had quickened,โ€ Officer Fisher said.

Officer Fisher said he yelled out โ€œsirโ€ to get the manโ€™s attention, but he continued walking.

โ€œI then began to run towards him in an attempt to stop him,โ€ Officer Fisher said. โ€œOnce I caught up to him, it seemed that he was shocked that I was there. I promptly told him to place his hands behind his back and that he was being detained. The male was then identified as Jose Delgado.โ€

According to police, Jose A. Delgado, 52, is a resident of Worcester, MA.

โ€œOnce I identified Jose, I radioed dispatch giving them his Massachusetts ID number,โ€ Officer Fisher said. โ€œAfter doing so, roughly five minutes later, dispatch informed me that Jose had an active warrant for his arrest from Worcester District Court. After learning this, I informed Jose about his warrant and that he was being placed under arrest.โ€

A default warrant for Delgadoโ€™s arrest was issued by Worcester District Court after Delgado failed to appear for a discovery hearing on July 23, 2026.

At around this time, a Walmart asset protection officer arrived at the scene to inventory the stolen merchandise.

โ€œWhile we were doing this, Detective [Ryan] Sweeney arrived to assist as well,โ€ Officer Fisher said. โ€œWhile [the asset protection officer] was accounting for the items, he informed me that Walmart would like to pursue charges.โ€

Detective Sweeney accompanied the asset protection officer back to Walmart to obtain an itemized receipt for the stolen merchandise.

โ€œThe total of the products that Jose took was $879.08,โ€ Officer Fisher said.

The asset protection officer issued a trespass order to Delgado and gave it to Detective Sweeney to serve to Delgado in person during booking process.

After learning of the trespass notice and value of the training receipt, Officer Fisher said he transported Delgado to the Leicester Police Department for booking.

Jose A. Delgado, 52, of Worcester, was charged with:

  • Larceny under $1200
  • Fail Appear Upon Recognizance, Misdemeanor

Delgado was arraigned in East Brookfield District Court on August 26, 2026. Following his arraignment, Delgado was released on personal recognizance.

Delgadoโ€™s next court date is a pretrial hearing scheduled for Oct. 21, 2026.
