BRATTLEBORO, VERMONT — The ex-boyfriend and “person of interest” in the death of Mary Anderson, a 23-year-old resident of Harvard, Massachusetts, was shot and killed by Vermont police Tuesday evening.
According to a press release from the Vermont State Police, Matthew Davis, 34 of Fitchburg, was spotted by a detective conducting a neighborhood canvass walking along Western Avenue in West Brattleboro around 7:45 p.m.
Davis was sought by authorities as part of the ongoing investigation into the disappearance of Anderson, who was last seen at about 10:30 p.m. Saturday in Hudson, New Hampshire. Anderson’s body was found early Tuesday morning inside her pickup truck, which was parked on Elliot Street in Brattleboro.
After the detective’s identification of Davis, the Vermont State Police and Brattleboro Police Department responded to the scene. Two detectives with the Massachusetts State Police were also in the area.
According to the Vermont State Police’s release, two troopers and a Brattleboro police officer shot at Davis who was armed with a knife. He was pronounced dead at the scene after EMS attempted to resuscitate him.
According to Vermont State Police, “the circumstances of the shooting of Davis are under active investigation by detectives with Vermont State Police’s Criminal Division who are assigned to offices from elsewhere in the state to avoid potential conflicts of interest.”
