BARNSTABLE — The Barnstable Police Department has announced the arrest of Yuxin Fu, a 24-year-old woman from Flushing, New York, for allegedly scamming a Marstons Mills resident out of $46,000. Fu was taken into custody on September 23 at JFK International Airport in New York as she re-entered the United States.
According to police, in December 2022, the Marstons Mills resident was deceived into transferring $46,000 to what was described as a “safe” government account. The scammer, posing as a Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) agent, falsely claimed that the victim’s social security number was linked to a criminal investigation in Texas. The victim was instructed to move their money to a secure account to prevent it from being seized.
After months of investigation and several search warrants, a warrant for Fu’s arrest was issued in June 2023. However, Fu had already left the country for China in May. She was apprehended upon her return to the U.S. and transported to Massachusetts by members of the Barnstable Police Detective Unit and the Massachusetts State Police Detectives Unit.
Fu faces charges of larceny over $1,200 and receiving stolen property over $1,200. She was arraigned in Barnstable District Court on October 4, where she was held on $100,000 bail at the request of the Cape & Islands District Attorney’s Office.
The investigation was a collaborative effort between the Barnstable Police Department, the U.S. Secret Service Cyber Fraud Task Force, the Massachusetts State Police, and the Cape & Islands District Attorney’s Office. The case remains under investigation, and Fu is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
