Cat killed in Lunenburg house fire; Red Cross assisting displaced family

LUNENBURG — On Saturday, March, 5, 2025, at approximately 1:43 p.m., the Lunenburg Fire Department responded to a reported house fire at 535 Lancaster Avenue.

According to a statement from the Lunenburg Fire Department, the first arriving crews encountered heavy smoke coming from a two-story split-entry home. All occupants had safely exited the building.

An additional alarm was sounded, bringing in engine companies from Fitchburg and Leominster, along with an ambulance from Groton. The Townsend Fire Department provided station coverage during the incident.

Firefighters were able to bring the blaze under control in about 25 minutes. Crews remained on scene for approximately two more hours to overhaul the fire.

The lower level of the home sustained moderate damage. No residents were injured, but a family cat was killed in the fire.

The Red Cross and Salvation Army are assisting the displaced family.
