Gloucester police officer charged with possessing child pornography; placed on leave last month

GLOUCESTER — A Gloucester police officer has been charged with possession of child pornography, according to a statement released Friday by Gloucester Police Chief Edward Conley.

“On Friday, May 9, the Gloucester Police Department was notified by federal authorities that one of our officers has been charged with possession of child pornography,” Chief Conley said.

The officer was placed on paid administrative leave on April 28, following the execution of a search warrant at the officer’s home by federal agents. Authorities have not yet released the officer’s name.

“Every officer swears an oath to serve the public with integrity,” Chief Conley said. “We hold ourselves to a higher standard, and we place tremendous importance on maintaining the trust of those we serve.”

Chief Conley stated that the allegations “run counter to every value of the Gloucester Police Department,” and said the department is fully cooperating with the U.S. Attorney’s Office. He also thanked the FBI and federal prosecutors “for their diligence and professionalism in the handling of this matter.”

Gloucester Mayor Greg Verga also issued a statement, calling the charges “incredibly concerning.”

“As Mayor, I want to assure our residents that we are fully cooperating with our federal partners and remain committed to a thorough and transparent process,” Mayor Verga said. “These charges are incredibly concerning, and the behavior that has been uncovered is both unacceptable and reprehensible.”

Mayor Verga acknowledged that the charges could seriously undermine public confidence in law enforcement and other government institutions, and emphasized that his administration remains committed to accountability and integrity.

“We understand that situations like this can impact public confidence, and that trust is something we must continue to earn every day,” Mayor Verga said. “My administration stands firmly behind the principles of accountability and integrity, and we will support our Police Department as it continues to uphold the high standards expected by the people of Gloucester. We remain focused on maintaining the safety and trust of our community.”

The Gloucester Police Department has stated it will not comment further at this time. Additional inquiries are being directed to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

  1. With the latest cops either retired early or on leave indefinitely for the latest embezzlement by multiple officers this isn’t shocking. Wonder which one:
