Westminster firefighters put out electrical fire in wall of second-story apartment building

WESTMINSTER — An electrical fire at a Main Street apartment building was quickly brought under control this morning thanks to the rapid response of Westminster firefighters and mutual aid from surrounding communities.

According to Westminster Fire Chief Kyle S. Butterfield, firefighters were called to 112 Main Street, Apartment 2D, at approximately 10:34 a.m. on Monday, June 23, 2025, after a tenant reported fire inside the walls of their unit.

When crews arrived on scene, there was no visible fire from the majority of the building, but smoke was showing from the second floor, and conditions inside the apartment indicated an active fire within the wall space.

A working fire was declared immediately. Crews from Engine 1 accessed the building from the rear, stretched a hose line into the apartment, and began a fire attack. Additional crews searched neighboring units to ensure residents were safe.

Chief Butterfield said mutual aid crews played a significant role in the response. Gardner Engine 3 laid a hydrant line from Main Street, and Leominster Ladder 1 set up on the rear side of the building to overhaul the exterior. Fitchburg Engine 2 checked nearby units for fire extension, and Sterling Ladder was assigned as the Rapid Intervention Team (RIT). The Hubbardston and Ashburnham fire departments provided station coverage, while Woods Ambulance stood by at the scene.

The fire was swiftly contained, with the majority of damage limited to the apartment where it started, although nearby units experienced some smoke and water damage.

No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the District 8 Fire Investigation Unit.
