16-year-old charged with murder in January shooting on Oakland Street in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD — A 16-year-old has been arrested and charged with murder in connection with the January 2025 shooting death of a 19-year-old man on Oakland Street, according to a statement from Hampden District Attorney Anthony Gulluni.

On Sunday, January 12, 2025, around 11:30 p.m., Springfield Police responded to a ShotSpotter activation in the 100 block of Oakland Street. When officers arrived on scene, they found an adult male gunshot victim, who was later identified as 19-year-old Semaj Brewster of Springfield. Brewster was transported to Baystate Medical Center, where he died from his injuries.

Springfield Police Homicide Unit detectives, led by Captain Trent Duda, launched an investigation and later identified a juvenile suspect. Detectives applied for and were granted an arrest warrant, Gulluni’s office said.

On Thursday, June 26, 2025, at approximately 12:30 p.m., Springfield homicide detectives, along with Chicopee police officers, located the 16-year-old on Dulong Circle in Chicopee and took the juvenile into custody.

The suspect was arraigned in Springfield District Court on one count of murder and is being held without the right to bail.

Due to the suspect’s age, their identity has not been released.

The case remains under active investigation by the Hampden District Attorney’s Office and the Springfield Police Detective Bureau’s Homicide Unit.
