ATTLEBORO — Attleboro firefighters extinguished a house fire on Greenwich Street late Saturday night, marking the city’s second structure fire in less than 24 hours.
According to a statement from Fire Chief Scott T. Lachance, crews responded to 21 Greenwich Street at about 10:58 p.m. on Aug. 9, 2025, following a report of a house fire.
When firefighters arrived on scene, they observed heavy flames coming from the rear of a two-story, single-family home with an attached in-law apartment. Engine 2, which had been returning from another emergency in the same neighborhood, arrived within two minutes of dispatch.
Crews knocked down the bulk of the fire from outside before moving inside to extinguish hot spots. The fire was contained to the second-floor in-law apartment, and all occupants were able to escape on their own.

Two people were transported to Sturdy Memorial Hospital for evaluation of suspected smoke inhalation; both were later released. The residents of the affected apartment will be temporarily displaced. No firefighters were injured.
“This could have been a much larger fire,” said Attleboro Fire District Chief Scott Godin. “Engine 2 happened to be in the area at the time of the call. Their quick arrival and decisive actions stopped the fire before it spread to other parts of the structure.”
Mutual aid was provided on scene and for station coverage by the North Attleborough, Seekonk, Pawtucket, and Norton Fire Departments. Fire crews cleared the scene at approximately 12:45 a.m.
The Attleboro Fire Investigation Unit determined the cause was accidental, stemming from the improper disposal of smoking materials.
Earlier that day, firefighters extinguished a two-alarm fire at the El Buen Sazon restaurant on Pine Street. The building was deemed a total loss, and the cause remains under investigation.
