SPRINGFIELD — A 19-year-old Springfield man who cut off his GPS ankle monitor is facing a long list of charges after police arrested him Monday in connection with multiple incidents, including a March shooting outside Union Station and a July armed carjacking.
At approximately 1:55 p.m. on Monday, September 29, members of several law enforcement agencies/units— including the Springfield Police Firearms Investigation Unit, Springfield Police Warrant Apprehension Unit, Springfield Police K9 Unit, Springfield Police Metro Unit, Massachusetts State Police, U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force, and Hampden County Sheriff’s Department — took Malachi Williams into custody.
According to the Springfield Police Department, detectives and a state trooper spotted Williams around 1:40 p.m. near the 0–100 block of Pearl Street. When officers moved in, Williams ran into a building and entered an unoccupied apartment on Elliot Street. He was located and arrested without further incident.
One of the warrants out for Williams’ arrest stems from a March 25 shooting incident outside Union Station, where two people were shot and suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Two juveniles were previously arrested in that case, and an illegal firearm was recovered. Following an ongoing investigation, police obtained a warrant for Williams’ arrest in connection with that incident.
Williams had also been arrested on July 12 in connection with a carjacking and crash into two homes on Eastern Avenue. During that arrest, officers recovered a fully automatic “ghost gun,” a firearm with no serial number and a sear-selector switch that converted it into a machine gun. Williams was released on bail with a GPS ankle bracelet, which he later cut off, leading to an arrest warrant being issued in connection with the July case.
Additionally, Williams had an active default warrant from Chicopee District Court and is now facing a new charge of breaking and entering for unlawfully entering an apartment on Elliot Street during Monday’s arrest.
