WEBSTER — On Friday, August 15, 2025, at approximately 5:05 p.m., Officer Patrick Trainor of the Webster Police Department was dispatched to the lobby of the Webster Police Department to speak with a 58-year-old man who reported that another man had just “slapped him and jumped him” at the bus stop on Main Street.

Officer Trainor said the man declined an EMS evaluation at the Webster Police Department.
“The other involved male party was ultimately positively identified as Mr. David Bottom,” Officer Trainor said.
According to police, David Z. Bottom, 43, is a resident of Hill Street in Webster, MA.
“[The reporting party] stated he was sitting at the bus stop on Main Street near the intersection of School Street when Mr. Bottom, who was unknown to him, approached him and other individuals at the bus stop and began yelling at them,” Officer Trainor said. “Mr. Bottom paced back and forth at the bus stop pointing at them and called each of them, ‘B*tch.’”
Officer Trainor said that the man admitted he yelled back at Bottom because Bottom had been shouting at a woman who was also in the area.
“A few moments later, Mr. Bottom reportedly slapped [the reporting party] in the back of the head, resulting in [the man] grabbing a nearby cane and striking him with it,” Officer Trainor said.
The reporting party said he stood up from the bench, and as soon as he did, Bottom ran toward him swinging, knocking him to the pavement.
“While on the pavement, Mr. Bottom continuously attempted to punch [the reporting party], according to him,” Officer Trainor said. “[The reporting party] was able to leave the area once Mr. Bottom walked away from the bus stop.”
Officer Trainor said that after speaking with the man, he and the reporting party went to the bus stop, where they found a woman sitting on a bench.
The woman told Officer Trainor she was present during the altercation.
“I spoke with [the woman] regarding the incident, at which point she told me Mr. Bottom started problems with everyone at the bus stop,” Officer Trainor said. “As she began walking toward the bus stop to prevent further issues, she observed Mr. Bottom slap [the reporting party] prior to him falling on the ground where he was struck several more times.”
Officer Trainor said that while he was at the bus stop, Bottom returned to the scene on foot and told him that he was struck with the cane first and reacted in self-defense.
“Mr. Bottom was advised he would be summonsed for the incident that occurred and to leave the area,” Officer Trainor said. “Webster EMS was dispatched to our location for an evaluation of [the reporting party] as he stated he was having more severe head pain. He was ultimately transported to UMass Webster by Webster EMS as a result of injuries sustained during the altercation.”
Officer Trainor said that prior to leaving the scene, a business owner from across the street said her security cameras recorded the incident.
“I subsequently went to the business to observe the footage of the incident. Mr. Bottom can be seen approaching the bus stop aggressively, pointing and yelling at citizens in the area,” Officer Trainor said. “His unnecessary and aggressive actions not only caused inconvenience, annoyance, and alarm to the public, but escalated to a physical altercation. Other citizens can be seen leaving the bus stop quickly in an attempt to avoid further interaction with Mr. Bottom.”
Officer Trainor said that, in the video, Bottom can be seen slapping the reporting party in the back of the head, which triggered a defensive reaction from him.
“Mr. Bottom then continued to physically assault [the reporting party] after he had fallen on the pavement, punching him with closed fists in the head/neck/torso area,” Officer Trainor said. “Mr. Bottom then kicked [the man] in the leg area with a shod foot.”
Officer Trainor said that after leaving the business, Bottom walked toward his location to confront him and Officer Spencer Donovan, who had also responded to the scene.
“Based on our observations of the incident, Officer Donovan advised Mr. Bottom he was under arrest, at which point he was handcuffed (DL) [double locked] and transported back to the Webster Police Department for booking,” Officer Trainor said. “Mr. Bottom was uncooperative during booking, and was secured in male Cell 2 as booking was not feasible at that time due to his actions. While in the cell, Mr. Bottom deliberately urinated on the cell floor.”
