State police deploy helicopter in renewed search for missing Auburn man

AUBURN — The Massachusetts State Police Air Wing returned to Auburn on Friday, Nov. 7, to assist in the ongoing search for 58-year-old Darren Cyr, who has been missing since shortly after 1 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 14.

According to a post from the Auburn Police Department, the aircraft was scheduled to fly low over the area while using heat-signature technology “to assist in the ongoing search for Mr. Cyr.” Police said there were no public threats or safety concerns at this time.

Cyr was last believed to be in the area of Mill Street and is thought to have left on foot. Police said he did not have any electronic devices on him that could help track his location, and no clothing description has been confirmed.

In mid-September, Auburn police led an extensive, multi-day search involving drones, helicopters, dive teams, multiple K9 units, and officers from several agencies. Despite those efforts, Cyr has yet to be found. The search covered wooded areas, bodies of water, and nearby train tracks.

At the time, police said they would begin scaling down physical search operations but continue to investigate actively. “Without new information, we will be scaling down our search efforts, but we are not giving up,” the department said in a Sept. 19 statement.

Investigators again asked residents and business owners to review any surveillance or trail-camera footage recorded after 1 a.m. on Sept. 14 — particularly from the Route 20 area of Auburn — for any sign of Cyr.

Cyr is described as 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighing about 190 pounds.

Anyone with information, images, or video that could assist with the investigation is urged to contact the Auburn Police Detective Bureau at (508) 832-7777.
