SOUTHBOROUGH — On Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2026, at approximately 11:19 p.m., Southborough Police Officer Jeremy McClosky was on patrol when he spotted a vehicle traveling on Turnpike Road with a license plate largely obstructed by snow.
According to a statement from Southborough Police Chief Ryan Newell, Officer McClosky initiated a motor vehicle stop and identified the driver as Jeremy Rhodes, 35, of Yakima, Washington, and determined that the vehicle’s Utah registration had been cancelled and traced back to a different vehicle.
“Following an inventory search prior to towing the vehicle, police discovered a loaded and unregistered handgun inside a blue backpack in the vehicle,” Chief Newell said in the statement. “The firearm had a 9mm round loaded in the chamber and eight more rounds in the magazine. An additional round was found underneath the driver’s seat.”

Officer McClosky said the vehicle Rhodes was driving was then towed from the scene and Rhodes was transported to the Southborough Police Department for booking.
Jeremy D. Rhodes, 35, of Yakima, Washington, was arrested and charged with the following:
- Carrying a Loaded Firearm without a License
- Possession of a Large-Capacity Feeding Device
- Possession of a Large-Capacity Firearm
- Possession of Ammunition without FID Card
- Attaching Wrong Plates to Conceal Identity
Rhodes was scheduled to be arraigned today in Westborough District Court.
