SHREWSBURY — A 48-year-old Worcester man is facing 16 charges after allegedly breaking into two homes in Shrewsbury, stealing an SUV from one of them, and striking three vehicles while fleeing police at speeds exceeding 90 mph.

On Tuesday, June 30, 2026, Shrewsbury Police Sergeant Brian Sklut reported that a man, later identified as Sean T. Carnes, 48, of Worcester, entered the attached garage through an unsecured door at 42 Stonybrook Lane.
Sergeant Sklut said Carnes entered the victim’s minivan after gaining access to the garage.
“Carnes subsequently exited the garage, leaving the driver’s side door of the vehicle ajar,” Sergeant Sklut said. “At this time, it is unknown if Carnes took anything from the vehicle.”
On the same day, Carnes also allegedly entered the attached garage at 24 Melody Lane through an unsecured garage door and then proceeded into the residence.
“Once inside, he took possession of a laptop case containing a laptop computer and various documents before proceeding to the second floor of the home,” Sergeant Sklut said. “There, Carnes encountered the homeowner, who attempted to de-escalate the situation by directing Carnes to drop the laptop case.”
Sergeant Sklut said Carnes dropped the laptop case as directed but then took the homeowner’s vehicle keys and fled the residence in the vehicle.
Police later located the stolen vehicle traveling west on Route 9 near Oak Street. When officers attempted to pull the vehicle over, Carnes allegedly sped off at a high rate of speed, and a police pursuit ensued.
“During the pursuit, Carnes operated the vehicle in a manner that put his life and other motorists at risk,” Sergeant Sklut said.
Carnes allegedly drove at speeds exceeding 90 mph in 30 and 40-mph zones, crashed into three different vehicles and continued driving, drove down the breakdown lane of Route 9 West, proceeded through several red lights at a high rate of speed, and then attempted to ram into a Shrewsbury police officer’s cruiser.

“Carnes also had a license status of revoked,” Sergeant Sklut said.
Sean T. Carnes, 48, of Worcester, was charged with the following violations/offenses:
- Breaking & Entering Building Daytime for Felony
- Breaking & Entering for Misdemeanor (two counts)
- Assault with Dangerous Weapon
- Larceny of Motor Vehicle
- Operating Motor Vehicle with Licenses Suspended, Subsequent Offense
- Attempt to Commit Crime, Misdemeanor (two counts)
- Leave Scene of Property Damage (three counts)
- Negligent Operation of Motor Vehicle
- Fail to Stop for Police
- Fail to Stop/Yield
- Speeding
- Marked Lanes Violation
Carnes was arraigned in Westborough District Court on July 1, 2026. Following his arraignment, Carnes was held on $10,000 cash bail.
Carnes’ next court date is a pretrial hearing scheduled for July 31, 2026.
