Hiker rescued from Mount Wachusett after leg injury prompts multi-agency response

PRINCETON — At 11:48 a.m. Saturday, the Princeton Fire Department was dispatched to Mount Wachusett for a report of an adult hiker with a possible leg injury.

Crews from the Princeton Fire Department, Westminster Fire Department, and other assisting agencies worked together to treat, extricate, and transport the injured hiker to a hospital for further medical care, according to a statement from the Princeton Fire Department.

The rescue took approximately two hours and involved 22 responders. A rapid response was made possible in part because a group of personnel were already at the East Princeton Fire Station, along with a staffed day shift ambulance crew.

Rescue personnel from various agencies carefully carry an injured hiker secured in an orange stretcher down a steep, rocky forest trail on Mount Wachusett.

In its statement, the Princeton Fire Department thanked Officers Holly Doyle and Emily Casella, who hiked in and provided critical trail condition updates. The Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) also assisted on scene.

The Wachusett Regional Emergency Communications Center was credited with providing accurate location data, helping crews determine the best access point.

The Princeton Fire Department’s statement did not include any identifying information about the hiker.
