LUNENBURG — The Town of Lunenburg and the Lunenburg Historical Society will host a public remembrance event this Saturday, Sept. 13, from 12 to 2 p.m., to mark the 25th anniversary of the closing of Whalom Park — once one of New England’s most iconic amusement parks.
Lunenburg Town Manager Jennifer Warren-Dyment announced in a statement that the event will be held at the Lunenburg Historical Society at 10 School Street and will include family activities, historical displays, and opportunities for the community to share memories of the park, which closed in 2000.

Founded in 1893, Whalom Park operated for 107 years and was the 13th-oldest amusement park in the U.S. and the second-oldest trolley park in the world. Generations of visitors knew it for its popular jingle: “Whalom Park, for a Whale of a Time!”

Displays at Saturday’s event will include original park memorabilia, a community photo “memory wall,” and opportunities for attendees to take pictures with the Whalom Clown. Limited-edition Lunenburg Police “whale” patches and signed copies of Images of America: Whalom Park will be available for purchase.
The original site of the park, located off Route 13 on Whalom Lake, is now home to a 240-unit apartment complex.
