BERLIN — On Tuesday, June 30, 2026, shortly after 3:30 p.m., Berlin police responded to reports of a shooting at the Shops at Highland Commons.
According to Worcester County District Attorney Joseph Early, when first responders arrived on scene, they located an injured individual suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. The victim was declared dead at the scene despite lifesaving efforts by Berlin police, Hudson police, Berlin Fire and EMS, Bolton firefighters and Boylston firefighters.
After the shooting, a witness from the scene followed the alleged suspect onto I-495 North and called Massachusetts State Police. State police were able to locate and stop the suspect’s vehicle at mile marker 91 in Lowell, near the Lowell Connector, the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office reported.
The Massachusetts State Police Crisis Negotiations Team, State Police Department of Field Services, and Massachusetts State Police detectives assigned to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office responded to the scene.
The Worcester County District Attorney’s Office said that based on the preliminary investigation, it appears the suspect sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound and was later pronounced dead.
Early’s office said there is no threat to the public at this time.
The investigation remains in its early stages and is expected to continue in the coming days. The incident is being investigated by the Berlin Police Department, Massachusetts State Police detectives assigned to the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office, Massachusetts State Police detectives assigned to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, State Police Crime Scene Services, the State Police Crash Reconstruction Section, the State Police Firearms Identification Section, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
