RAYNHAM — A 41-year-old New York man faces fraud and larceny charges after allegedly using a fraudulent credit card to purchase five Pokémon cards valued at $11,950 from a Raynham trading card shop.
According to the Raynham Police Department, on Aug. 5, 2026, at approximately 7:37 p.m., Raynham police responded to a local business following a report that a customer had used a fraudulent credit card to purchase five Pokémon cards: a Bubble Mew valued at $3,300, a Jolteon V valued at $1,400, a Shining Mew valued at $1,500, a Magikarp valued at $4,500, and a Blastoise card valued at $1,250.
Police reviewed the store’s surveillance footage, which captured the suspect, who was wearing a black hat, a black t-shirt with the image of a dog on it, and a black crossbody bag. The footage also showed him leaving the store in a white Mercedes-Benz and captured the vehicle’s registration, the Raynham Police Department said.
The following day, Aug. 6, a card shop in Manchester, New Hampshire, which had seen a social media post about the fraud published by the Raynham business, notified the Raynham Police Department that a man matching the suspect’s description was inside their store, attempting to purchase Pokémon cards.
Raynham police contacted Manchester Police, who stopped the Mercedes and identified its driver as Chencai Xie, 41, of Fresh Meadows, New York.
The Raynham Police Department said Xie was driving the Mercedes captured in the Raynham store’s surveillance footage and wearing the same clothing as the suspect recorded the previous day. Investigators determined that the vehicle was a rental.
Raynham police subsequently obtained an arrest warrant from the Taunton District Court charging Xie with the following:
- Credit Card Fraud Over $1,200
- Larceny Over $1,200
Raynham police reported that the stolen Pokémon cards have not yet been recovered.
On Aug. 17, Raynham police said Xie will be arraigned in Taunton District Court at a later date.
