ATTLEBORO — On Monday, Aug. 17, 2026, at approximately 8:35 a.m., firefighters with the Attleboro Fire Department responded to the area of West Street and Berwick Road following a report that a vehicle struck a utility pole.
According to the Attleboro Fire Department, when crews arrived on scene, they found a heavily damaged vehicle that had struck a utility pole. The sole occupant of the vehicle, a 19-year-old man, was trapped inside.
Firefighters used multiple hydraulic cutting and rescue tools to extricate the driver while paramedics simultaneously provided advanced medical care, including intravenous therapy and medication, inside and around the vehicle.
Crews freed the driver after working for approximately 38 minutes. Attleboro Fire Department paramedics then transported him to Rhode Island Hospital with injuries believed to be life-threatening.
“This was a complex call that required our firefighters and paramedics to work simultaneously in a very confined and difficult environment,” District Chief Michael Maitland said. “Our crews had to balance a difficult extrication with the need to provide immediate medical care.”
Fire crews remained at the scene until approximately 9:40 a.m. The Attleboro Police Department is investigating the cause of the crash.
